What a non-owner policy is

A non-owner policy provides liability coverage when you drive a vehicle you do not own. It follows you rather than a car, and it pays for injuries and property damage you cause to other people.

It does not include collision or comprehensive, because there is no vehicle of yours to repair. And it does not cover a car that is available to you regularly — the household car you drive every day belongs on that car's policy.

Who needs one

Drivers who need an SR-22 but do not own a vehicle. This is the most common reason by a wide margin. The state wants proof you carry liability coverage; a non-owner policy provides it, and we file the SR-22 against it electronically, usually the same day. People who regularly borrow or rent cars. It covers you above the rental company's minimum and can let you decline their daily liability product, which usually costs more over a few rentals than the policy does in a year. People between vehicles. Selling a car and not replacing it straight away creates a gap in coverage history, and a gap raises your rate when you next buy. A non-owner policy keeps it continuous for very little. Drivers who use car sharing or only drive occasionally but want their own liability protection.

What it does not do

It does not repair the car you were driving. If you damage a borrowed vehicle, the owner's collision coverage handles that, subject to their deductible and their rate consequences.

It does not cover a vehicle in your household, or one furnished for your regular use, which in many cases includes a company car. And it is not a substitute for insuring a car you own — buy one, and the policy has to change.

Cost, and the part people miss

Non-owner policies are generally far less expensive than standard auto policies, because the largest cost in auto insurance is repairing and replacing vehicles and there is no vehicle here.

The under-appreciated benefit is continuity. Carriers price continuous coverage favourably, and a year without a policy is a year that costs you later — often more than the non-owner policy would have cost in the first place.

Non-owner SR-22

If the state requires an SR-22 and you do not own a car, this is the standard answer. We submit the filing electronically, usually the same day the policy is in force; the Department of Revenue then takes up to five days to process it.

Do not let it lapse while the filing is required — a lapse generally restarts the clock. What happens if your SR-22 lapses · SR-22 filings.

Common questions

What is non-owner car insurance?

Liability coverage that follows you rather than a vehicle, for when you drive cars you do not own. It covers injuries and damage you cause to others, but not the car you are driving.

Can I use a non-owner policy for an SR-22?

Yes, and that is the most common reason people buy one. It satisfies the state's proof-of-coverage requirement for drivers without a vehicle, and we file electronically, usually the same day.

How much does non-owner insurance cost?

Considerably less than a standard policy, because there is no vehicle to repair or replace. The price still depends on your driving record and which state you are in. Call us and we will quote it across our carriers.

Does it cover a rental car?

It generally provides liability coverage when you rent, which can let you decline the rental counter's liability product. It does not cover damage to the rental vehicle itself unless that is added separately.

Can I get one if I live with someone who owns a car?

That depends on the carrier and on whether the vehicle is available for your regular use. If you drive it routinely, you usually need to be listed on that car's policy instead.

What happens when I buy a car?

Call us before you drive it. The non-owner policy needs to be replaced with a standard auto policy, and if you carry an SR-22 the filing has to move across without a gap.
